Gab is an American alt-tech social networking service known for its far-right userbase. Widely described as a haven for extremists including neo-Nazis, white supremacists, white nationalists, the alt-right, and QAnon conspiracy theorists, it has attracted users and groups who have been banned from other social media and users seeking alternatives to mainstream social media platforms.
Distributed Denial of Secrets provided a pre-release copy of the data to a reporter with Wired. As is standard practice, the reporter reached out to Gab for comment. In response, Gab posted a blog entry stating that -
“reporters, who write for a publication that has written many hit pieces on Gab in the past, are in direct contact with the hacker and are essentially assisting the hacker in his efforts to smear our business and hurt you, our users.”
The “GabLeaks” hack contains more than 70GB of data taken from the social media site, which includes over 40 million posts.
Distributed Denial of Secrets, told Wired that a hacktivist called “JaXpArO and My Little Anonymous Revival Project” took the data out of the site’s backend database.
The Dataset is currently only being offered to journalists and researchers.
